In Unternehmen führt daran kaum ein Weg vorbei, für Privatnutzer sieht es aber anders aus. Es gibt abgespeckte Versionen von Excel, die Sie kostenlos nutzen können. Außerdem gibt es verschiedene Alternativen zu Excel, die dem Funktionsumfang des Originals auch gratis recht nah kommen.

Excel ist für viele professionelle Nutzer das wichtigste Tool der ganzen Office-Suite. Angefangen hat das Ganze am 30. September 1985, denn damals gab es die erste Version. Einigermaßen kurios war, dass diese erste Version nicht für Windows, sondern für den Mac veröffentlicht wurde. Erst Excel 2.0 kam 1987 auch für Windows.
Heute gibt es die Office-Suite von Microsoft nur noch unter dem Namen Microsoft 365 und als Abo-Modell. Die Möglichkeit, die Software mit einem einmaligen Kauf zu erwerben, gehört damit der Vergangenheit an. Wer kein Abo abschließen will, kann dennoch eine kostenlose, aber abgespeckte Version nutzen oder auf Alternativen zurückgreifen.

Nein, die Vollversion von Microsoft Excel ist ein kostenpflichtiges Programm und kommt als Teil von Microsoft Office. Das können Sie entweder über eine klassische Lizenz kaufen oder im Rahmen von Microsoft 365 im Abo beziehen.
Wie kann ich Microsoft Excel kostenlos nutzen?
Es gibt verschiedene Möglichkeiten, Excel gratis zu nutzen. Eine Möglichkeit ist, auf die Online-Angebote von Microsoft zu wechseln. So können Sie Excel, mit abgespecktem Funktionsumfang, im Browser nutzen. Möglichkeit zwei ist die ebenfalls kostenlos erhältlichen Excel-App. Auch die ist abgespeckt, kann aber auf Geräten mit einer Bildschirmdiagonale von bis zu 10,1 Zoll gratis genutzt werden. Bei größeren Bildschirmen fällt die Bearbeitungsfunktion weg. Das klappt dort nur mit Microsoft 365-Abo.
Eine dritte Möglichkeit ergibt sich für Schüler und Studenten. Viele Schulen arbeiten mit Microsoft zusammen und stellen Schülern das komplette Microsoft Office gratis bereit, also auch Excel. Für Android, iOS und auch Windows 10 stellt Microsoft auch Apps seiner Office-Komponenten Word, Excel und PowerPoint bereit. Auch die sind im Vergleich zur klassischen Desktop-Version im Funktionsumfang abgespeckt. Für die Kosten hat sich Microsoft ein nicht besonders eingängiges System überlegt. Kostenlos kann man zum Beispiel die Excel-App erstens nur für den Privateinsatz und zweitens nur auf Geräten mit einer Bildschirmgröße von maximal 10,1 Zoll nutzen. Mit einem kostenlosen Microsoft-Konto lassen sich auch neue Tabellen erstellen und bestehende bearbeiten. Auf dem Smartphone also kein Problem, für ein iPad Pro müssen Sie Microsoft 365 aber kostenpflichtig abonnieren, um die Excel-App auch für die Bearbeitung nutzen zu können.

LibreOffice Calc
Microsoft setzt zwar mit Excel den Office-Standard schlechthin für Tabellenkalkulation, es gibt aber gute Alternativen, etwa Calc als Teil vonLibreOffice. Funktional kann man sich mit dem Opensource-Office richtig austoben, für den privaten Gebrauch eine absolute Empfehlung.
Rein funktional sollte man zwar auch in Firmen mit LibreOffice in vielen Fällen auskommen, das Problem ist aber die Kompatibilität zu Microsoft Office, die stillschweigend in der Geschäftswelt vorausgesetzt wird. Wenn Sie beispielsweise mit Kollegen aus anderen Unternehmen zusammen eine Tabelle erstellen und alle nutzen Excel, ist es ziemlich nervig, wenn Sie Calc einsetzen und das zum Beispiel Layout-Verschiebungen und Formelfehler verursacht.
Wir bevorzugen zwar LibreOffice, aber natürlich können Sie auch das bekanntere OpenOffice einsetzen, auch dort finden Sie Calc als Excel-Ersatz.

Google Tabellen
An Online-Alternativen für Office-Programme mangelt es nicht. Da ein Google-Konto schon wegen der weiten Verbreitung von Android und Gmail für viele Nutzer einfach schon vorhanden ist, ist auch Google Tabellen eine mögliche Excel-Alternative. Es ist vergleichbar mit Excel Online und bietet ähnliche Vorteile, wie die einfache Bearbeitung im Team und die simplen Möglichkeiten zum Teilen von Tabellen.
Aber auch die Nachteile sind ähnlich, so legt man die eigenen Tabellen auf Google-Server und muss für die Bearbeitung online sein. Im Vergleich zur Excel-Desktop-Version muss man auch funktionale Abstriche machen. Ob das aber wirklich schmerzt, kann man nur durch Ausprobieren herausfinden.

Als kostenlosen Office-Alternative bietet sich auch SoftMaker FreeOffice an. Es umfasst Alternativen zu Word, Excel und PowerPoint und hat sich der Kompatibilität mit den Microsoft-Formaten verschrieben. Um es nutzen zu können, muss man sich einmalig mit Namen und Mail-Adresse registrieren.
Dann kann man mit dem Paket eigene Tabellen basteln, was im Vergleich zu den Online-Diensten auch Offline möglich ist, etwa unterwegs im Zug.
