Why mess with a summertime classic? How about because they are completely delicious and much less messy for kids to eat than the classic s’mores recipe. You’ll love how easy they are to make as a summer dessert idea with just a few ingredients: marshmallows, Hershey’s chocolate bar, and a bag of Teddy Grahams.

Why I Love This S’mores Recipe

It is officially S’mores season! Camping and backyard fire pits are all about the unhealthy food you can cook on them. Don’t try to convince me otherwise 🙂 The classic campfire go-to is a s’more but as a Mom of six kiddos, I know all too well about the sticky mess they become after that first bite. Literally, they are covered from head to toe in marshmallow and chocolate! So, this summer was the perfect time to find a mess-free way to eat our favorite campfire dessert.

This simple campfire s’mores recipe solution popped into my head a few nights ago when I made Walking Tacos to bring to the baseball field for my son’s game. Why couldn’t I use the same concept in a s’mores recipe? Using individual bags of Teddy Grahams makes these no-mess treats so simple. If my 4 year old can eat them without being sticky afterward, anyone can. Scroll down to take a peek at my short video to see for yourself how easy they are to make!

What are Campfire S’mores in a Bag

Campfire s’mores are a classic American treat that is very popular in the summertime when families make fires while camping or hanging out with friends in their backyards. The classic s’mores recipe makes a sandwich of melted chocolate and a toasted marshmallow between two graham crackers. While s’mores are delicious, they are very messy when you take a bite! Melted chocolate and marshmallow squeezes out all over your hands. S’mores in a bag keep the same melted chocolate and campfire toasted marshmallow, but put them into an individual bag of Teddy Graham crackers. Then, you can eat them with a fork. All the same amazing flavors but with zero mess all over your hands, or that of your kids.

Campfire S’mores Ingredients

If you’re used to making the classic s’mores recipe, there isn’t much of a change with these campfire s’mores in a bag! Well, except for the lack of a big mess when you eat them. And if you are feeling adventurous, don’t miss the recipe variations I’ve included a bit further down. Each one puts a yummy spin on the classic s’mores recipe.

S’mores Recipe Variations

Being a home cook provides endless opportunities to experiment with recipes, personalizing them to your tastes and creativity. Any of the following variations would be great spin-offs of this campfire s’mores recipe:

  1. Use individual bags of Mini Oreos instead of the Teddy Grahams for a more intense chocolate campfire s’mores experience. You can also use the vanilla Oreo version as well. We actually call these S’moreos in our family because yes, we are that corny!
  2. Substitute Mini Reese’s peanut butter cups for the Hershey’s chocolate bars. If you love the combo of chocolate and peanut butter, this s’mores recipe variation is definitely the one you should try ASAP!
  3. Use flavored marshmallows for a fun spin on the classic campfire s’mores. I’ve used pumpkin spice, candy cane, and strawberry flavors, all of which were extremely delicious.
  4. Substitute Mini Snickers for the Hershey’s chocolate bars. This is my favorite version of campfire s’mores in a bag. I love the addition of caramel and peanuts in with the chocolate.
  5. Use individual bags of Mini Fudge Striped cookies in place of the Teddy Grahams for a fun take on the classic honey grahams s’mores recipe.

Campfire S’mores Recipe in a Bag FAQs

How do you make s’mores on a fire?

The key to successfully making s’mores on a fire is to let the fire burn down enough until most of the fire is glowing hot coals. You need an intense source of heat without too much open flame. You want to melt the chocolate and perfectly toast the marshmallow without either one going too far. Ideally, you’ll have rocks around the campfire which will act as the perfect surface to set half of the graham cracker with a piece of milk chocolate on top. This to allows the chocolate to begin to melt while you roast the marshmallow on the coals. Once the marshmallow is brown all around, use the graham cracker with the melted chocolate and the other half of the graham cracker to pull the marshmallow off the hot roasting stick, making a gooey sandwich.

How do you roast marshmallows on a campfire?

Unless you like the flavor of burnt sugar, wait until your campfire has burned down enough until most of it is hot, glowing coals. Using coals gives you a perfectly brown marshmallow, while open flames will only result in that marshmallow catching fire. It takes about an hour for a decent-sized fire to burn down so be sure to give yourself plenty of time. Once you have glowing coals, grab a long roasting stick and place a marshmallow on the end. If you use sticks that are too short, you’ll only end up burning yourself. Make the stick as parallel to the coals as possible and slowly rotate the stick until it is evenly browned all over.

Where can I find snack sized bags of Teddy Grahams for campfire s’mores?

Most grocery stores carry these individual-sized bags of Teddy Grahams in the same aisle as the other graham crackers. You’ll find them just a bit further down the aisle. They come in a box of twelve, already portioned 1-ounce bags. If by chance your store doesn’t carry them, grab a box of honey Teddy Graham crackers and portion them into small disposable bowls. While they won’t be s’mores in a bag, they will still work just as well to eliminate the mess of the traditional s’mores recipe.
